Podcast - Episode 124: Fandom!

ms marvel fanfic.png

Hillary joins us again, and I used it as an opportunity for GIRL TALK!!!!!!!

Sort of. Hillary and I are both no strangers to fandom. Dave maybe has a different approach to the properties and creators that he loves. A *normal* approach, some might call it. One that allows you to function in your day to day life without thinking things like "Man, I'll bet Mulder would really hate this bus ride I'm on right now."

Anyway, we have a lot of thoughts about engaging with fandom, as opposed to merely being a fan, and why the fan experiences of a straight white cis male might be different from, y'know, everyone else when it comes to consuming culture.

But we also talk about comic books. And X-Files.

Anyway, LOOK AT DILTON!!!!!

Dilton, Riverdale doesn't deserve you.

Podcast - Episode 123: Comic Book Sequels

Secret_Wars_II_(UK)_Vol_1_32.jpg

Are comic book sequels every any good? Ehn...sometimes. Sort of. We talk about a bunch of them in this episode, good and bad.

We are also joined by Hillary Titley this week to talk about the X-Files, and also about I, Tonya (in what is possibly the loosest segment of 'This Week in Winter Soldier' ever).

Dave and I get into it again over Batman: Year Two. That damn comic is going to end our friendship one day. We did an episode once about things we disagree on, and it got pretty heated.

My thoughts on Batman: Year Two, are well-documented.

Next week we are gonna talk about fandom and reminisce about fandoms we have been a part of and how we feel about fandom in general today.

Podcast - Episode 122: Comic Book Resolutions

We're back with a brand new theme song, courtesy of Wordburglar! It's awesome! Check out his website and buy all of his music!

We have some 2018 resolution suggestions for comic book publishers, and we get to those in the last part of the episode.

If you want to see what the hell we're talking about when we're describing that 'Create Your Own' Marvel comics thing, here are the details.

And if building a bronze statue of Wolverine in Fort McMurray, Alberta is a cause that is important to you, you can donate to the indiegogo page here.

Podcast - Episode 121: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

STAR WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We saw the new Star Wars movie and we have so many thoughts about it! And we're joined by our pal J.Bone this week because he has thoughts too! We all loved it.

I have such complicated feelings about Kylo Ren. Why do I love horrible fictional men???

Anyway, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen the movie because we spoil the hell out of it.

Podcast - Episode 120: Creator-owned Characters

nexus.JPG

This week we are looking at some of our favourite creator-owned characters. Basically this episode is a convenient way to talk about some characters who have barely gotten a mention on this podcast in the past. Characters like Nexus, Madman, Grendel, Bone, and Martha Washington.

I don't do a good job at all of describing what I love about Nexus in this episode. I blame a lack of sleep, and a brain that has been knocked around my skull due to constant coughing fits for the past three weeks. But trust me when I say, Nexus is amazing and everyone should read it. Also: he's a total dreamboat.

I have no time to write a blog post this week, but here are a couple of quick things:

You should read Mackenzi Lee's YA novel, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. It's a fun adventure story and a truly sweet and sexy romance. The audiobook is great, if you prefer those. I can't wait for her Loki book.

I have my author website and Twitter account set up now, so you can check those out if you like. Not much content yet, but I did post this short piece I wrote about my childhood determination to play hockey in a town that had no girls' hockey team.

Thanks for listening! See you next week to talk alllllll about The Last Jedi!

Podcast - Episode 119: The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer!

Oh my god you guys! The Infinity War trailer is here! We have thoughts about it!

The issue of Catwoman that I really like, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, is Catwoman #32. For my money it's the, ahem, better Batman/Catwoman relationship exploration one-shot.

And, as always, I recommend that entire Catwoman series. It's one of my favourite comic book series. Brubaker does a great job, and then Will Pfeifer takes over on writing and is also great.

I will share some links to my author website and social media accounts when I actually have some content to post there. For now I am just frantically revising my manuscript! But I am very excited to be with Riptide Publishing and I can't wait for you guys to meet Scott and Kip (those of you who are interested in a cute-but-explicit romance between an NHL superstar and an underemployed college grad).

Ladies Night is happening at Strange Adventures on Friday, Dec 15 from 6:30-8pm! If you live in the Halifax area, and are a female or identify as female, you should definitely check it out!
