Podcast - Episode 153: The Nameless City

Nameless City Banner.jpg

The penultimate week of our summer book club! We are talking about Faith Erin Hicks' amazing series, The Nameless City. Well, technically just the first book, but the third and final book is out on Sept 25 and I can't wait!!!!

Ok, you guys wanna see the drawing J.Bone did of my characters, Scott and Kip, from my upcoming hockey romance book Game Changer? Of course you do!

game changer.jpg

Eeeeee!!!! Look at them!!!! So in love.

Thanks again to Matt for commissioning that sketch for my birthday! Best present ever!

And, if you are interested, here is an interview I did with Faith Erin Hicks way back in 2008 for the release of The War at Ellsmere!

Join us next week when we wrap up the summer book club with Infinity Gauntlet!

Podcast - Episode 121: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rey-and-Luke-Skywalker-in-The-Last-Jedi.jpg

STAR WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We saw the new Star Wars movie and we have so many thoughts about it! And we're joined by our pal J.Bone this week because he has thoughts too! We all loved it.

I have such complicated feelings about Kylo Ren. Why do I love horrible fictional men???

Anyway, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen the movie because we spoil the hell out of it.

Podcast - Episode 104: The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens (with guest J.Bone!)

It's an exciting week guys. Not only are we talking about The Rocketeer, one of Dave's favourite things, but we are also joined by our pal -- and frequent Rocketeer artist -- J.Bone! We love him!

We read The Rocketeer: The Complete Adventures, which collects all six issues of Dave Stevens' Rocketeer comics. We also watched the 1991 Disney movie. So we are totally ready to talk about the high flying adventures of Cliff Secord.

Just real quick, too, the books I read and recommended this week were Becky Cloonan's By Chance or Providence (Image) and The Wendy Project by Melissa Jane Osborne and Veronica Fish (Super Genius). I also recommend the prose novel, Peter Darling by Austin Chant, if you want to read another beautiful reinterpretation of Peter Pan.

Dave recommended the first issue of Elsewhere (Image) by Jay Faerber, Ron Riley and Sumeyye Kesgin.

Next week we are reading The Thing: The Project Pegasus Saga (Marvel) by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, John Byrne and George Perez. We are both very excited about it. It is technically out of print, but can be found in a number of formats that may be kicking around your local comic shop. First of all, it can be found in issues #53-58 plus issue #60 of Marvel Two-in-One, so you may be able to find the original issues. Or you can find it in black and white in Marvel Essentials: Marvel Two-in-One vol 3. Or you can find the hardcover collection that was published in 2010. Or, if you're like Dave and me, you have the old trade paperback from the late 80s. It's also available digitally on Marvel Unlimited and on Comixology, if it comes to that. The hardcover (which is what is on Comixology) has extra content, by the way.

See you next week! Thanks, J! And thanks for listening, everybody!

Podcast - Episode 61: A Visit From J.Bone!

J.Bone came to visit! It took months to convince him that:

a) Nova Scotia has much more comfortable summer temperatures than Toronto (it was muggy as hell here);
b) My kids are fun (they are...fine);
c) There are lots of hot guys here (there are)

Anyway. He was here and it was awesome and now he's gone and I'm sad. But first he recorded this episode of the podcast with us! I don't know if there was a theme, per se, but we had fun.

The nice thing about J.Bone coming to visit is that he leaves lots of nice things, including crayon drawings that came from a very heated drawing competition with Mitchell:

Here's the 'Joker' round of the competition:

And then J put Trevor to work penciling pages. Not cool, J:

My kids seriously loved him.

Ok, on with the podcast.

This is the Tim Sale cover we talk way too much about. It's for Batman #6, which was out this past week. Look at those ridiculous shorts!

Side note: I would like J to start a podcast called "I Don't Want to Take Down Another Artist, BUT..."

J was kind enough to share some of the always hilarious Baby Huey comics he's been reading:

Comedy gold!

The collected trade paperback of The Saviors by James Robinson and J comes out in October from Image Comics, so pick that up! Look at how nice!

THAT'S how you do an eye-catching cover, my friends.

Ok, let's just round this post out with Bucky straddling that motorcycle:

Podcast - Episode 57: Cosmic Odyssey

DCAF is over and Dave and I had a nice time! We recorded via Skype this week because I have somehow injured my neck and cannot drive. I think I'm really getting the hang of this Skype recording stuff, though. Sounds good!

It's week 7 of our summer book club and we read the 1988 DC space adventure, Cosmic Odyssey, by Jim Starlin and Mike Mignola. It really is great. We poke fun at it a lot in this episode, but we sincerely both love it.

Here is that article in the Washington Post I was talking about that talks about fan entitlement and the importance of submitting to the vision of the artist.

Here's the birthday tweet Chris Evans posted for Sebastian Stan that made news headlines (for some reason):

Here is the sketch that Michael Cho did for me of Captain America (dreaming about Bucky):

And here's the Plastic Man sketch he did for Mitchell:

Both totally excellent. We're very happy.

Speaking of happy, I was very excited to receive a package in the mail this week from our pal J.Bone! It included this ADORABLE little sketch of The Summer Soldier:

@originaljbone gives me the best presents. 💕 #wintersoldier

The Stucky fanzine by Jess Fink and Yuko Ota is, I believe, no longer available. But you can check out their awesome Tumblr sites, which will lead you to other great stuff you can read or buy: Jess Fink and Yuko Ota

Anyway, it's full of cute stuff like this:

I did buy a Winter Soldier dinky car, because obviously. On the Instagram post, Dave asked Steve Epting if he knew about this thing. He replied! He owns one himself. I like to think he means a full-size version. Like, that car is Steve Epting's ride.

JUST LIKE IN THE COMICS!!!! #wintersoldier

What a weird thing.

And, of course, I also got a hot Wal-Mart exclusive Winter Soldier figure.

Got a new boyfriend. Wal-Mart exclusive. #wintersoldier

And I am totally not putting him in weird, somewhat sexy scenes with my Captain America figure.

Valium is a really good drug.

Here's the panel from Cosmic Odyssey that really cracks me up:

"What? Oh, I don't care about that anymore. Look at this computer thing I did..."

Next week we're reading and discussing Batgirl: Year One/Robin: Year One

Podcast - Episode 39: Sick Day Comics!

Guys, I'm sick. Sick enough that I thought we'd have to cancel the podcast completely this week! Gasp! But instead, inspired by an afternoon spent watching plucky Steve Rogers overcome all obstacles in Captain America: The First Avenger, I wrapped my flu-addled brain around how to record via Skype and Dave and I ended up recording a pretty ok episode!

So this week we share our favourite "sick day" comics. The comics that sooth our souls when we are feeling under the weather. It's pleasant.

First we talk about a few other things, including the Dr. Strange set photos, which you can see here and here and probably elsewhere. For the record, this one is probably my favourite:

mads-mikkelsen-benedict-cumberbatch-dr-strange-set-52.JPG

Here's young, hot Steve Rogers looking all hot, thanks to Daniel Acuna:

Yes. Yesssssss.

Let's keep the hotness train rolling. Here's a link to some scans of the Sebastian Stan interview in the Malaysian men's magazine, August Man. And, hey, if you need some incentive, here is a sample photo:

Man, go to hell, Sebastian.

And of course there's a hot behind the scenes photoshoot video:

Which inevitably led to hot gifs made from the video:

Man, I am feeling better by the minute here!

As I mention, fans are calling the glorious age we find ourselves in these past few weeks "Sebpocalypse". There is a great recap here.

And if you like Chris Evans (haven't forgotten about you, babe!), he is on the cover of Esquire Middle East and you can find that interview here. It also has a photo shoot video and gifs and all the stuff. He's also very attractive.

Oh, and who likes adorable J.Bone drawings of Steve and Bucky?

I could look at those all day. I do, in fact. The first one is my lock screen/background. Oh my god those guys are probably going to hug in Civil War. They probably are!!! Guys!!!!

ALSO, J drew a very funny little cartoon based on something Johnathan said on last week's episode about Batman v Superman. Check it out.

So there you go. Follow J.Bone everywhere! (Online. Not in real life. That's terrifying).

I'm running out of steam here. Enjoy the episode. Dave and I rec some pretty great comics, so have your pencils ready. I really am feeling a lot better now.
